 MATERIALS MANAGEMENT LEARNING PROGRAMME

This one year distance education learning programme provides an education process for the further development of basic managerial skills in warehousing, materials handling and supply chain systems. The broad aim of this programme is to equip personnel in the industry with basic management skills so they can optimise their operations in terms of customer service, operational productivity and cost optimisation.

Course topics

  • Materials Handling – Types of materials handling processes, pallett storage, materials handling equipment, sortation systems, industrial robotics.
  • Warehousing Systems – Introduction to warehousing, the warehouse function, optimising the warehouse.
  • Management Skills & Inventory Control – Money and cash flow, break-even analysis and inventory management, inventory costs, service levels / stock levels, forecasting.
  • Purchasing – What is purchasing?, identification of user needs, type of items to be purchased, vendor evaluation, quality goods and pricing, forecasts and inventory, benchmarking.
  • Receiving Logistics - Introduction to logistics management, inbound logistics, internal logistics.
  • Distribution Logistics - Outbound logistics, order processing, packaging. dispatch, Road, rail air and sea transportation.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

The programme in Materials Management is aimed at senior personnel working within the materials handling industry with at least a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or the successful completion of a stores related programme. Relevant work experience, responsibility and involvement in the materials handling industry is preferable.
