Based on Unit Standard 244025 (Apply Fundamental Concepts and Principles of Supply Chain Management), NQF Level 5, 20 Credits.
The supply chain includes the flow of material from source to customer, as well as the management and integration of all related business activities, i.e purchasing; managing inventories; managing the flow of materials; managing all the appropriate information and computer systems associated with that flow of material; controlling all the transport infra-structures; the financing of the material; integrating supplier needs with manufacturing needs; integrating customer needs with distribution needs.
This one-year distance education programme is aimed at providing learners with knowledge of all aspects of the supply chain. This programme can also be done via web-enabled facilitation.
Course topics
- Strategic supply chain framework –Defining the supply chain, understanding supply chain drivers and obstacles, implementing supply chain improvements, strategic planning, supply chain models, customer service strategy, trends in supply chain management.
- Supply chain elements – In this section we explore various aspects of the elements that make up a supply chain namely: purchasing, inventory, warehousing, transportation, customer service, information systems.
- Supply chain optimisation - Supply chain optimisation and decision support, integrated supply chain management, fundamentals of demand planning, Time Series forecasting methods, measures of forecast error, aggregate planning, Material Requirements Planning (MRP), benchmarking.
- Other strategic supply chain considerations - Legislation and supply chain management, organisational ethics and code of conduct.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
This programme is aimed at senior personnel working within the supply chain management environment or persons looking to improve or acquire skills in supply chain management. At least a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent relevant level 4 qualification is required. Relevant work experience within the supply chain industry is essential.
